Voter ID Name Change Process

Voter ID Name Change Process

Changing the name on your Voter ID card, typically due to reasons like marriage, legal name change, or corrections of spelling errors, involves updating your details in the electoral roll. This process is facilitated through Form 8, which is designated for corrections of details in the electoral roll. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to go about it:

Online Process:

  1. Visit NVSP Portal:
    • Access the National Voter Services Portal (NVSP) at https://www.nvsp.in/. This portal provides various services related to voter ID, including corrections.
  2. Login/Register:
    • If you’re a new user, you’ll need to create an account by registering on the portal. If you already have an account, simply log in using your credentials.
  3. Access Form 8:
    • Once logged in, look for the option to correct details in the voter ID card or the electoral roll, which will direct you to Form 8.
  4. Fill in the Details:
    • Complete Form 8 with the required information. When it comes to changing your name, ensure you provide the correct and new name as it should appear on your voter ID.
  5. Upload Supporting Documents:
    • You’ll need to upload documents that support the change of name. This could include a government gazette notification of name change, marriage certificate (if the name change is due to marriage), or other legal documents supporting the change.
  6. Submit the Form:
    • Review the information you’ve entered for accuracy, and then submit the form online.
  7. Acknowledgment:
    • Upon submission, you’ll receive an acknowledgment number or slip, which you can use to track the status of your application.

Offline Process:

  1. Obtain Form 8:
    • Form 8 can be collected from the nearest Electoral Registration Office (ERO), or you can download it from the NVSP website or the Election Commission of India’s website.
  2. Complete the Form:
    • Fill out Form 8 with all necessary details, including your new name.
  3. Attach Required Documents:
    • Attach self-attested copies of the documents supporting your name change.
  4. Submit the Form:
    • Submit the completed form and documents to the nearest Electoral Registration Office or hand it over to the Booth Level Officer (BLO) in your area.

Points to Note:

  • Verification Process: After you submit Form 8, a Booth Level Officer (BLO) might visit your residence for verification, or you might be called for a hearing by the Electoral Registration Officer.
  • Track Application: Use the acknowledgment number to track your application status on the NVSP portal.
  • Collect Updated Voter ID: Once your application is processed and approved, you will be issued a new Voter ID card with the updated name. The process time can vary, so check the status periodically.
  • Correctness of Information: Ensure all the information provided in Form 8 and the supporting documents are accurate to avoid delays or rejection of the application.

Changing your name on the Voter ID card is a crucial step in ensuring your electoral records are up-to-date, reflecting your current legal name.
